Scaffolding Materials
Scaffolding materials in Singapore include hot-dip galvanised steel S355J2, aluminium 6061-T6 alloy, BS 2482 Grade A timber, and traditional bamboo. Steel delivers 355 MPa yield strength for heavy-duty applications rated to 6.0 kN/m², while aluminium offers 276 MPa yield at 33% of steel's density. Material selection is an engineering decision driven by load demand, height requirement, and environmental exposure under BS EN 12811-1.

Material selection determines scaffold load capacity, service life, and regulatory compliance. Ezzogenics supplies BS EN-certified steel, aluminium, timber, and bamboo with traceable test certificates.
Steel: The Benchmark for Heavy-Duty Applications
Hot-dip galvanised steel S355J2 remains the benchmark scaffold material for heavy-duty construction, shoring, and high-rise facade access. Yield strength of 355 MPa, elastic modulus of 200 GPa, and galvanise coating to BS EN ISO 1461 provide structural reliability across 20–25 year service lives. Ezzogenics' steel inventory is sourced from mills holding ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certification, with mill-test certificates retained for full traceability.
Steel's primary limitation is mass: a standard 2.0-metre ledger weighs 7.8 kg, requiring mechanical handling for high-bay erection and crane-assisted transport for multi-storey logistics. For projects without crane availability or with restricted floor loading, steel's weight becomes a design constraint. Ezzogenics evaluates these constraints during site-assessment and specifies hybrid systems where necessary.
Aluminium 6061-T6: High Strength-to-Weight Performance
Aluminium 6061-T6 provides 276 MPa yield strength at 33% of steel's density, enabling manual handling and rapid assembly without powered equipment. Ezzogenics' aluminium inventory is extruded to tight dimensional tolerances and solution-heat-treated to T6 temper for maximum strength. Ring-lock and wedge-lock connection systems distribute loads through cast node points, eliminating the single-point-grip failure modes associated with traditional couplers.
Aluminium's natural Al₂O₃ oxide layer delivers passive corrosion immunity without surface treatment. In Singapore's marine atmosphere, aluminium outperforms galvanised steel after the 15-year service mark. Load ratings of 2.0 kN/m² for mobile towers and 3.0 kN/m² for frame systems cover the majority of interior fit-out, maintenance, and residential applications. Ezzogenics specifies aluminium for projects under 15 storeys with restricted crane access and light-to-medium duty loading.
Timber and Bamboo: Traditional Materials with Regulatory Constraints
Timber scaffold planks to BS 2482 Grade A (38 mm × 225 mm, 1.5 kN/m² UDL) are specified by Ezzogenics for interior finishing work and heritage-structure access where metal components would damage substrate materials. All timber is kiln-dried to 18% moisture content, treated with boron-based preservatives to H3 hazard class, and branded with species, grade, and treatment-batch identifiers. Timber is not permitted for exterior facade scaffolds exceeding 6.0 metres in height under WSH (Scaffold) Regulations.
Bamboo (Bambusa blumeana, localised as 'Buluh') retains traditional use in Southeast Asian construction but is restricted to Category A (light-duty, sub-4-metre) scaffolds under Singapore's WSH framework. Wall thickness variability (8–15 mm), node spacing inconsistency, and anisotropic mechanical properties prevent engineering certification for structural shoring or personnel-lift applications. Ezzogenics supplies bamboo only for non-structural screening, signage support, and cultural-event staging where regulatory exemption is obtained.
Material Specification by Ezzogenics Engineers
Material selection is not a procurement afterthought — it is an engineering decision driven by load demand, height requirement, environmental exposure, duration, and handling constraints. Ezzogenics' engineers evaluate these parameters during the design phase and specify materials accordingly. All material specifications are documented in the scaffold design dossier, submitted to the client for BCA compliance and insurer approval.
Ezzogenics maintains 3,500 tonnes of galvanised steel, 800 tonnes of aluminium 6061-T6, and 20,000 lineal metres of certified timber in covered Singapore storage. Just-in-time delivery is coordinated through our fleet to align with construction sequencing. Scaffolding FAQ
The optimal scaffold system depends on height, load demand, geometry, and duration. Our engineering team evaluates these parameters and recommends frame, tubular, suspended, tower, or mobile configurations with PE-endorsed design drawings.
Every scaffold exceeding 4 metres requires PE design approval, MOM-certified erectors, and handover inspection. We manage all regulatory requirements including BCA submission and weekly competent-person inspections.
MOM mandates weekly inspections by a competent person. Re-inspection is required after weather events, structural alterations, or impacts. We provide weekly inspection services with photographic documentation.
Yes. All non-standard scaffolds, systems exceeding 30 metres, and cantilevered configurations receive PE-endorsed structural calculations, load-path verification, and BCA submission documentation.
Steel offers higher load capacity (up to 6.0 kN/m²) for heavy-duty construction. Aluminium provides 50–60% weight reduction for faster assembly and manual handling, ideal for interior fit-out and maintenance.
